Honda HR-V Tire Center

Like death and taxes, buying new tires for your car is an inevitability. Unfortunately, there are no clear cut universal guidelines for car owners to grab on to. Even the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) passes on voicing an opinion, preferring to defer to tire manufacturers and automakers. And as the song says, “the beat goes on…..”

Differing Opinions on Tire Life

Many auto manufacturers say tires need to be replaced six years after the manufacture date, regardless of the depth of the tire treads. Tire manufacturers including Michelin and Continental feel tires can last up to ten years but advise annual inspections be performed after the fifth year. The Rubber Manufacturers Association says there is no way to put an expiration date on tires because there are too many extenuating circumstances to consider including heat, underinflation, storage, and driving conditions.

Extenuating Circumstances of Tire Life

Heat: NHTSA research has shown that tires age more quickly in warm climates. It also found that exposure to sunlight and coastal climates contribute to the aging acceleration.

Storage: On the other hand, if a tire remains unmounted, whether, in your garage or a tire shop, it will not age as quickly, nonetheless it will age. A spare tire, because it has been inflated and mounted is technically in service rather than being stored, but if it remains inside the vehicle will age slowly. This does not apply to one that is mounted underneath the vehicle since it will be exposed to the elements.

Driving conditions: How a tire is treated has the biggest effect on how long it will last. A tire that’s constantly underinflated; has hit the curb many times, or has ever been repaired for a puncture will not have as long a life. On the other hand, tires on cars that are only driven on weekends will last much longer.
